Brigadier General Gheorghe VIŞAN

Brigadier General Gheorghe VIŞAN was born on 12 October 1961 in Vălenii de munte, Prahova. Following his graduation from the Infantry Officers Military School in 1983 he served as platoon leader and company commander in 7th Mechanized Regiment. During this period, he completed the Infantry Company Commanders Course in 1987 and Heavy Infantry Weapons Course in 1988. Between 1991 and 1993 BG VIŞAN attended the Academy of Advanced Military Studies in Romania. After graduation, he reported to the Guard Brigade Headquarters and served as a staff officer for seven years.

In 1998, BG VIŞAN completed the German Language Course and later in 1999 he graduated from the German General Staff College and EURO (Joint and Combined Operations) courses, both in Hamburg, Germany.

From 2002 to 2009 he was assigned to different positions within Romanian General Staff as follow: Expert within Operations Directorate, Head of Training Office, Head of Combat Readiness Section and Head of Training Branch. During this period he attended Combined Joint Task Force Course in Lisbon/ Portugal and Combined Joint Task Force Course, Karup/ Denmark.

In 2005 due to his large experience he was deployed in Iraq as deputy Chief of operations at Multinational Division Central–South/ MND-CS, Operation Iraqi Freedom. In the same time he was assigned as Romania’s Senior National Representative for IRAQ. 

Following command, in 2009 he was assigned as Chief of Staff within the 1st Infantry Division and in 2014 as the Commander of 2nd Infantry Brigade.

During 2014-2015, BG VIŞAN served as Commander of Joint Forces Command in Bucharest and starting with 2015 he was assigned as Chief Of Staff within Headquarters Multinational Division South-East. In 2016 he completed NATO Senior Officer Policy Course, Germany.

BG VIŞAN’s awards and decorations include Romanian “Military Merit” medal (3rd class), Romanian “Military Merit” medal (1st and 2nd class), Military Virtue (Honor), Badge Honor of Romanian Land Forces, Badge Honor of Romania Ministry of Defense, Badge Honor of Romanian General Staff, Medal for Merit (US National Guard of California), Medal for Merit (US National Guard of Illinois), Distinguished Service Medal (US National Guard of Illinois), Commemorative medal of MND-CS (Poland), Badge 1st class - 1st Polish Mechanized Division (Tadeusz Kosciusko) and the Bronze Medal of Polish Ministry of Defense.
